Noise, grain and the trade-off between them

Digital noise is the colored speckle a sensor produces when it amplifies a weak signal — high ISO, night shots, deep shadows. Film grain is different: it is part of how the picture was made, and scans carry it as texture rather than error. The noise source setting tells the model which one it is looking at.

Every denoiser trades noise against texture, because at the pixel level fine detail and fine noise look alike. Detail retention is that dial: raise it and some speckle stays, lower it and skin, fabric and foliage start looking like plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between noise and grain?

Noise is sensor error, mostly random colored speckle. Grain is the texture of film, part of the image itself. Set the source to scanned film and turn on the grain option when you want the character kept.

Why does skin look waxy after denoising?

Detail retention is too low for the strength you used. Raise retention to high, or lower the strength — the pass cannot tell fine skin texture from fine noise without that hint.

Does it enlarge the photo too?

No, it only cleans. Run the upscaler afterwards if you also need a larger file, or use the enhancer to do both in one pass.

Which strength should I start with?

Around 50 percent for high-ISO photos, lower for anything already fairly clean. Judge it at 100 percent zoom, not on the thumbnail.

Can it fix JPG compression blocks?

Partly. Blocking is not noise, so it is smoothed rather than removed. Start from the least-compressed copy you still have.
